The buildings at 335 and 337 S. Main Street were originally constructed as a single building (circa 1888) before being divided into two separately owned structures.

 

In 1907, the properties were purchased by the Ball family, W. C. Ball owning the building at 337 and George W Ball owning the building at 335 S. Main to the north.  In 1909 the northern building was updated with a new stone façade bearing the Ball name, which remains a distinctive feature today.  Both buildings retain their historic Italianate architectural style and are approximately 14.5 feet wide.  The southern building at 337 S. Main still features its original interior brick walls and wood floors, while the northern building at 335 S. Main retains its original tile flooring. 

 

One of the earliest known occupants was A. D. McBean’s Confectionery Store in 1888.  In 1891, the storefront was home to the Briles Candy Factory, which later expanded into Briles Café & Candy Factory, offering fine candies, ice cream, catering services, dining, and even an oyster parlor.

 

Over the years, these buildings have housed a remarkable variety of businesses that served the Carthage community including jewelry, shoe, and clothing stores, beauty shops and Firestone Auto Supply.  The upper floors were equally active, housing professional offices for attorneys, physicians, and real estate companies.
